Packers 2015 Training Camp
2015 Green Bay Packers Training Camp

*************************************************************

Head coach Eric Mangini’s 5 year plan is in full effect. Year 2 produced another winning season. The Packers are now 19-13 under Mangini. It’s time to take the next step and that’s making the playoffs. The Packers as usual were VERY busy in the off season. There will be no less than 9 new starters. Green Bay had no interest in this years draft, instead choosing to trade their high picks for players that will step in and start

Last years team started strong, going 5-1, only to finish at 4-6. Many players had career years, including QB Mark Sanchez. He put up MVP type numbers despite missing 4 games to injury. He had an incredible 23-5 TD/Int ratio and passed for almost 3000 yards. This year looks to be his best.

The defense played exceptional despite being under manned all year. Not 1 Packer made the Pro Bowl, but their defense was awesome, especially their pass defense.

The entire coaching staff was brought back and 2015 looks to finally be the year.

The Packers feel their roster is complete and that any rookies drafted won't make the team, if they happen to make the final roster, it will only be on special teams.

Below is a list of all the transactions made.

Coach Mangini will be a bit tougher on the players this training camp. He is in the 3rd year of his 5 year plan and expect to be in the playoffs this year. In the past he has resorted to some very strange training methods. This year he intends on keeping it simple. Getting back to the basics. Simple, old school training methods will be reintroduced. Michael H.E. Roth was brought in as a special assistant to Coach Mangini for this camp.

OFFENSE

QB-

Mark Sanchez (96)
Tim Tebow (93)
Kevin Kolb (77)

QB is the most important position in RZL and the Packers feel they have 3 great ones. Todd Kreuger was brought in to run this part of the camp for the QB. He has introduced 4 new drills to help improve the QB's overall skill set.

Globetrotter

This is an excellent drill for ball security. Quarterbacks work the football in a circular motion around their head, under their arms, around their waist, around their knees, around each knee, weaving through their legs and finally “playing catch” between their legs.

Coaches shout commands of which body part the ball revolves around--usually starting with the head and working downwards. Coaches also shout the command “reverse” which changes the direction the ball is rotating. This should be done numerous times.

The drill concludes with five ‘drops’--the quarterback dropping the ball and then grabbing it. This is done with five drops with the power hand and five drops with the off- hand.

Toss sweep and option drill

Set up a line of quarterbacks holding footballs with the coach in the “Running/Pitch Back” position. The coach should be in a position behind and off to the side of the quarterback--where a running back would be receiving a toss sweep or an option pitch.

The quarterback faces away from the coach/running back, in a position where he would be taking a snap from center. Quarterback reverses out and executes a toss sweep to the coach. (This simulates either a toss sweep or a quick pitch play.)

The quarterback then moves to the other side until all quarterbacks have executed the pitch. Then the beginning quarterback again executes the pitch to the coach and all other quarterbacks follow till all the quarterbacks have executed a pitch both to the right and to the left.

Now the quarterback executes an option pitch in the same manner. If the type of option your team runs has an inside or outside veer dive fake then this can be simulated in the drill by the quarterback. In the option phase of the drill the coach yells “pitch” and the quarterback breaks down and executes a pitch stepping towards the “pitch” man/coach.

Knee drill

Two quarterbacks start with their right knees on the ground, facing each other ten yards apart. One quarterback has a ball on the ground next to his right leg. The quarterback picks up the ball with his power hand, puts the ball to his ear with his off- hand also on the ball and throws it to his partner quarterback across from him. The partner QB catches the ball, places it on the ground and does exactly the same thing throwing the ball back.

Quarterbacks continue playing catch in this manner while the coach helps them with the finer points of their throwing techniques: leading with the throwing elbow, ball at ear and pointing first with wrist and then index finger upon release of the ball.

3/5 Step drop and wave drill

Two quarterbacks start (one with a ball) facing each other 15 yards apart. The coach stands about seven yards from the quarterback with the ball. Quarterback with the ball faces the coach in an “under center” position.

The coach gives a command and the quarterback executes a three- step drop with his feet “chopping/firing” on his third plant step. The coach then gives visual directions with his hands (such as improving quarterback focus by keeping eyes forward) and the quarterback executes a wave drill moving right, left, forward and back.

Passrush technique drill

Purpose
To develop good feeling and automatism for the different pass rush techniques

Description
Have LB pair up facing each other in a 2-point football position, designate one row as the pass rushers and the other as pass blockers. Call the technique they should use (bull, rip, swim, ...) and the side they should pass the blocker. On command the pass blockers drop back like a pass blocker, and the pass rusher close on them and use the correct technique to pass him. On the whistle they reset, with changed designations.
This drill can be done with or without pads (without pads it's a good pre-practice warm-up routine).

Coaching Points
Since this is not a physical drill, hand quickness and correct technique is most important.

Read the play and react drill

Purpose
To teach the linebackers to read the block of the offensive lineman and recognize the play and react properly.

Description
Align 4 players as three OL-men plus a FB, put two players as DL on the outside two OL and a LB on the middle OL.
Signal the offensive players their assignments and a snap count.
On the snap count the offensive players carry out their blocks and the linebacker reacts accordingly. Make sure all linebackers get a sufficient number of repetitions.
Start off at half speed, and pick up the speed as players get better.
include DL personnel if you don't have enough linebackers.

Coaching Points
Make sure offensive personnel carries out its assignments correctly.
Linebackers have to be in proper stance and alignment before the "snap".
Emphasize the correct movement while reading the block/play and the correct reaction to the read play.
Don't allow any sloppiness on either side.
The intensity of contact should be low, correct and quick reaction is the purpose of this drill.

Height and accuracy drill

Purpose
The purpose of this drill is to concentrate on kicking the football in a straight line while getting good enough height on the kick to clear the line of scrimmage.

Description
The kicker places the football on the tee, or the holder places the football on the tee 7 yards from the goal post upright. The football is placed on the same line as the goal posts (end line). The kicker kicks the football down the line and at the goal post upright. The kicker's main objective is to get the ball up over the height of the cross bar (represents line) and to either hit the upright with the football or land the ball in a 4 yards sector (marked with cones) forty to forty five yards down field.

P

Jon Ryan (8Cool

Drop consistency drill

Purpose
The purpose of this drill is to work on the mechanics of a consistent drop which is essential in executing a good punt.

Description
The Punter should align himself on one of the yard lines working across the football field. He should take his normal stride into the ball and drop the ball on the line without kicking it. The proper drop should have the nose of the football slightly in and down. This will cause the ball to bounce back and slightly outside of the line the punter is working on, indicating a good drop.

*************************************************************
Team Drills

7 on 7 passing drill

Purpose
On Offense work on passing game and simultaneously work on Defense Pass coverage.

Coaching Points
Make sure the QB doesn't hold the ball longer than he could in full scrimmage or game.
Blitzing LB should be picked up by RB, if not due to assignment he should run by the QB. So you still can see if the coverage is doing ok.

The 2-Minute Drill

Purpose
The purpose of the 2-Minute Offense vs Defense Drill is on the offensive side to work on both sides of the ball on the 2-Minutes Situation:

Offensive Side: Play calling, quick lineup, recognition of the defensive coverage, ...

Defensive Side: Quick recognition of the offensive lineup, alignment and assignment according to offensive lineup, down-and-distance-situation, time situation...

Description
Preparation:
The responsible coach for the 2-Minute Offense prepares for each practice a set of scenarios which will be practiced, i.e. Ball on own 43, 1:35 to go and 2 points down and the number of available timeouts for each side. - He should make some scenarios where a field goal is sufficient, and some where a TD with a 2-Point conversion are needed...
Immediately after team warm-up (and at least once a week) the 2-Minute Drill is announced.
All Offensive Players go to one side of the field and the defensive players will group in the opposite sides teamzone.
Then the first scenario is announced and the ball is placed accordingly.
From now on make it as game like as possible: Have someone (Assistant Coach) operate the "game-clock" according to the league-rules, have another coach (or inactive player) spot the ball as quickly as possible...
The only exception to real game situation is the "quick whistle", that is as soon as the forward progress is obviously stopped the whistle stops the play, don't let any injury prone team-tackling happen, if avoidable. Also tell the defense that a good wrap-up is enough for a tackle!
Each drive ends due to a turnover, turnover on downs, time-expires (defense wins) or score by the offense sufficient to win or tie the game (offense wins)

Coaching Points
No coaching during the drill.
The only coaching during the drill is what you also can do during a game from the sidelines.
Coaching between drills is ok.
If possible video tape the drive with a camera covering the whole field (well all players on the field) and coach afterwards in the classroom, on where the players left unnecessary time on the field and which routes weren't run right, and show the QB and the receivers how to take advantage of misalignments and assignments of the defensive coverage.
On the defensive side you can teach how alignments and assignments can be improved

***********************************************************

As you can see Training Camp 2015 will be a serious one focusing on basics. The Packers are ready to take that next step and 2015 should be their year to break their playoff drought. 10 wins and a wild card is not out of the question.

Packers make noise in RFA
CB Donald Washington was signed away from KC for a 5th rounder. Washington is 1 of only 2 CB in all of RZL that is at least 6' tall with 99 jump. The Packers feel this will allow them to finally be able to win the jump ball.

WR Demetrius Byrd was signed away from SD for a 5th rounder. Byrd is a bit of a project, but at 6' with 94 speed and 92 acc, the Packers hope he can compete with the all of a sudden very youthful core of WR's.

All 4 of the Packers RFA's were retained. There is discussion that HB Green will be offered a long term deal shortly.
