Cardinals Close to Finalizing Roster |
Cardinals Sign Three Vets
With the start of the 2015 RZL season almost here, teams are finalizing their rosters and making sure all the pieces are in place to compete. The Cardinals are no exception, and while they didn't have the cash to make a splash in the blind bidding stage of free agency, they've certainly gotten their feet wet during the blind bidding stage, signing three veteran players, two with Superbowl rings.
Some say the Cardinals sought after Crable strictly for his Brady Quinn-hitting skills
After being surprised to see his name appear on the market, the Cardinals quickly got to work negotiating a contract with veteran LB Shawn Crable. While Vince Redd was previously slotted to play #2 MLB, he will now have to fight for the job against Crable. While they are both slow, with Redd being faster, Crable boasts better experience, tackle technique, agility, and acceleration. Even if Crable doesn't see the field much after this season, the Cardinals staff hopes he can turn into a mentor and teach young linebackers Joseph Burnett, Freddy Nickols, and Rosario Garza a thing or two along the way, and at the bare minimum he will provide great depth at the linebacker position as well as a presence in the locker room, having already won a championship with the Steelers organization and knowing what it takes to get the job done.
Moore was a key component to the Steelers 2011 Championship run
The next target of the Cardinals free agency campaign was Crable's ex-teammate WR Clarence Moore, who was also a part of the 2011 Pittsburgh Steelers championship team. Moore, while less likely to see as much playing time as Crable, will still likely see some playing time when the coaches want to get creative and create a mismatch. Even though he's lost a step or two athletically, he still towers over opposing cornerbacks with an intimidating 6'6" frame, and still has great hands and route running skills. Clarence is also a mentor that will help develop the young WR Milan Finch.
Osi comes to Arizona in search of a championship ring
The last big-name signing for the Cardinals was veteran DE/OLB Osi Umenyiora. While Osi played most of his career at defensive end, he has spent his last two seasons playing outside linebacker for the St. Louis Rams, amassing 161 tackles, 28 TFL, 6 sacks, 4 FF, and 30 DFL over the past two seasons. He will fill the exact same role in Arizona this season, most likely playing on the right side of the line. While he has lost his quick first step over the years, his speed is still in-tact, along with his almost 280 lb, 6'3" frame. The coaching staff is hoping he can continue his dominance at the position and post similar numbers to his previous years at the position.
Brown Out, Weaver In
In other news, the Cardinals made two more trades recently, dealing veteran CB Tarell Brown to Green bay on Tuesday and acquiring disgruntled FS Manuel Weaver from the Redskins. The reported deals are as follows:
Cardinals Send:
CB Tarell Brown
2016 3rd Round Pick (ARI)
Packers Send:
CB Brice McCain
2016 2nd Round Pick (GB)
2016 5th Round Pick (GB)
-and-
Cardinals Send:
FS Darcel McBath
DE Riddick Carpenter
Redskins Send:
FS Manuel Weaver
2016 4th Round Pick (WAS)
The Cardinals front office feels pretty good about Brown's stay in Arizona in the grand scheme of things. In exchange for a season and a half of services, including five interceptions last season, the cost of having Brown turns out to be the difference between the speedy McCain along with a fifth round pick, and a third round pick. While Brown would have been used sparingly this season, McCain will be able to cover any deep threats the opponent might have. While before, with Brown, any team with two speedy WRs could have easily stretched the field against a slower Arizona secondary, the team can now counter such an attack with two fast CBs in McCain (95 SPD) and Antoine Cason (98 SPD). Brown's mentor role could had the potential to aid in the growth of young CBs Clay Alvarado and Jahi-Word Daniels, the organization felt this was too good of value to pass up, especially with the added safety a speedster such as McCain brings to the table.
As for the Weaver deal, this was a very tough call for the franchise. While McBath and Carpenter were both slated for reserve roles this season, McBath was set to take over starting FS duties next season and Carpenter was still the starting LE in the 4-3. Also, Weaver brings plenty of baggage of his own, as his morale is amongst the lowest in the league and he is the not-so-proud owner of the gloomy team distraction and injury prone roles. This could be a problem for Arizona down the road, as SS Mcelroy also has the injury prone role, and it would not be a good scenario if both starting safeties went down. However, Weaver's physical talent was just simply too immense to pass up, as the front office felt they had to pull the trigger on this one.
2015 Outlook
Along with trading Brown, however, comes the steep price of a near $5m cap hit, and along with that, some hefty restrictions. Brown's cap hit brings the Cardinals within $.07m of the $20m limit, and thus they will be unable to move anyone with a bonus from now until the end of the season. With that in mind, let's take a look at what should be the finalized starting lineup for the 2015 Arizona Cardinals.
QB: Matt Leinart
HB: Desmond Mayer
FB: Cole Bennett/Felix Jones/Craig Stevens
TE: Craig Stevens/Jared Cook/Cole Bennett
WR: Maurice Stovall
WR: Percy Harvin
WR: Buster Davis/Milan Finch
LT: Shannon Boatman
LG: Lydon Murtha
C: Louis Vasquez
RG: Travis Bright
RT: Jake Long
LE: Calais Campbell
DT: Frank Morton
DT: Billy Hughes
RE: Clark Edwards
LOLB: Rosario Garza
MLB: Freddy Nickols
MLB: Vince Redd/Shawn Crable
ROLB: Osi Umenyiora
CB: Antoine Cason
CB: Jahi Word-Daniels
CB: Brice McCain
FS: Michael Huff
SS: Seymour Mcelroy
K: Neil Rackers
P: Mike Dragosavich
While there are still some moves left to be made, such as shipping off veteran OLB Chad Greenway and signing a cheaper replcaement, the starting lineup appears to be set in stone for the 2015 season. Per usual, stay tuned for more Cardinals updates as we get ready for another year of football to kick off! |

2015 Arizona Cardinals Training Camp |
2015 Arizona Cardinals Training Camp
2014 Recap:
Grading the Offense
Total Offense: 389.3 YPG (5th)
Passing Offense: 253.8 YPG (15th)
Rushing Offense: 135.6 YPG (4th)
Scoring Offense: 29.2 PPG (3rd)
Grade: A
The expectations for the offense in Arizona heading into the 2014 season were pretty high after bolstering the offensive line by acquiring big names such as Jake Long, Lydon Murtha, and Shannon Boatman. But the offense still managed to exceed all expectations after ranking in the top five in total offense, rushing offense, and scoring offense.
Desmond Mayer, taken in the late second round of the 2014 draft, was a big factor in that. The Cardinal's front office had high hopes for Mayer and even gave him the nod over Chris Wells as the team's feature back, but no one had predicted he would break the rookie records for rushing yards (1,663) and rushing touchdowns (12). Finishing third in the league in rushing yards, Mayer was a key component to the Cardinals offense. Chris Wells, who racked up over 1,400 yards the previous season before losing his job to the rookie, also deserves a mention, as he rushed for over 500 yards on just 80 carries, averaging 6.28 YPC, and also found the end zone six times himself. Together, the pair combined for the fourth best rushing offense in the league.
Although the passing offense near as prolific as the rushing attack, it was still in the top half of the league in passing yards, and more importantly, kept turnovers to a minimum, as the committee quarterbacks kept interceptions to a ninth best 13, with Leinart throwing just eight for the second straight year. The team also did the bulk (63%) of its scoring through the air, finishing eighth in passing touchdowns with 36. Percy Harvin and Maurice Stovall each had very nice seasons receiving, and combined for over 2,500 yards and 20 TDs.
Overall, the offense really took off this season, right on the shoulders of rookie RB Desmond Mayer and their offensive line. The lack of an elite passing attack keeps the grade from being an A+, but the unit was certainly deserving of an A grade.
Grading the Defense
Total Defense: 340.0 YPG (8th)
Passing Defense: 250.2 YPG (19th)
Rushing Defense: 89.8 YPG (6th)
Scoring Defense: 22.1 PPG (8th)
Sacks: 46 (T-6th)
Takeaways: 35 (3rd)
Opposing QB Rating: 74.00 (4th)
Grade: A+
The defense has a similar story to the offense, in that it’s only defense came in the passing yards category. However, the defense played very well in just about every other regard, finishing in the top ten in total defense, rushing defense, scoring defense, and sacks, and in the top five in takeaways and opposing QB rating.
It’s hard to pinpoint just one player that truly made this defense click, although if you were looking to CB Antoine Cason or MLB Freddy Nickols would probably be good places to start. The true strength of the unit was perhaps its versatility. Playing half of their games in the 3-4 formation and the other half in the 4-3, opposing quarterbacks never really knew what was going to be thrown at them. With mutli-talented players such as OLB/DE Joseph Burnett, 4-3 DE/3-4 DE/3-4 OLB Calais Campbell, and 4-3 DE/3-4 OLB Riddick Carpenter being able to play different positions in different formations, it really opened up a lot of creative opportunities to surprise other teams.
Looking at the strength of the unit as a whole, it is equally hard to find one individual thing that stands out about the rest. Sure, the run defense stands out as being better than the pass defense, but was it? While yards were certainly given up through the air, the defense was still tied for third in interceptions, tied for sixth in sacks, and held opposing quarterbacks to a 74.0 average QB Rating.
At the end of the day, there really wasn’t a weakness on this defense. Even though the passing yards stat doesn’t paint the best picture, the unit as a whole was relentless towards opposing quarterbacks in the form of sacks and takeaways, giving them the grade of A+.
2015 Off-Season:
Heading into the off-season, there weren’t too many areas of immediate need for the Cardinals. Starters Jason Allen, Michael Huff, Derrick Johnson, Jason Allen, and Chad Greenway had all lost a step, but there were players waiting in the wing to take over at most of those positions. With that in mind, the front office decided to look to improve the speed of the offensive line, find a CB/WR of the future, find a nose tackle to play in the 3-4, and possibly add a linebacker.
The RFA stage saw two important pieces to the future retained in CB Jahi Word-Daniels and FS Darcel McBath. Word-Daniels was eventually locked up to a seven year deal worth close to $30m that should see the hard-hitting corner play out his career in Arizona, while McBath signed a one year extension and will have to wait until later to receive an extension. McBath will likely sit behind FS Michael Huff for one more year before finally taking over the job due to a lack of focus last season. If McBath continues to decline, Huff may have to be moved in order to open up a spot for the young safety.
Around this time, the Cardinals entered negotiations with the Houston Texans for LT Louis Vasquez. While Vasquez has been quickly labeled a bust due to his poor performance his first three years, the Cardinals front office feels he was simply playing the wrong position. Despite having a great combination of speed and strength, Vasquez sorely lacks agility, a highly important attribute at RT. With a verbal agreement in place to send Vasquez and 3.8 to Arizona in exchange for FS Jason Allen, OLB Donnell Tyler, and DT Khalif Mitchell, the Cardinals were free to continue negotiations with the Green Bay Packers to deal C Linwood Dowe. Dowe was developing quickly, and looked to be a mainstay on the Cardinals line, but his lack of any kind of speed had been taking its toll and really showing up on gameday. The deal sent Dowe to the Packers in exchange for 2.26 and MLB Vince Redd, who is expected to start at MLB in the 3-4. With Dowe out and Vasquez in, the Cardinals had accomplished one of their first goals of the off-season in rooting out the weak spot on their line, and brought in a force to play MLB alongside Freddy Nickols at the same time.
The next major step forward was to move up in the draft. While it would normally be great to have 1.30, 2.3, and 2.26 at your disposal with more than one position in need of young talent, the draft class lacked any real depth and the Cardinals decided to go after a big time prospect. Finding the perfect suitor for this type of transaction in the Colts, the trio of picks was dealt to Indy in exchange for the sixth pick in the draft. While the fans were oozing with anticipation as to who would be the next Freddy Nickols selected, the Cardinal’s brass had other ideas on their mind. Shortly over a day later, the pick was dealt along with aging veteran Derrick Johnson and 3.8 in exchange for the 2014 8th and 40th overall picks, OLB Rosario Garza and WR Milan Finch, respectively.
After trading 3.20 to Tampa Bay for RB Zack Keys on the eve of the draft, the Cardinals entered the big day without a selection until the last pick of the fifth round. But that didn’t stop the Cardinals from getting the players they wanted, as they ended up moving their 2016 2nd, 4th, and 4th round picks to Miami and Tennessee in exchange for 3.2 and 4.5. With 3.2, the Cardinals took the heir apparent to incumbent quarterback and Arizona legend Matt Leinart in QB Colin Porter. Porter, while lacking high-end arm strength (which will be developed), is a very pro-ready prospect and actually is arguably better than Leinart was when he began his career nine seasons ago. 4.5 saw the selection of LG Marlon Fuller, who the Cardinals feel has great potential and is strong in the areas that matter the most. To finish out the draft, the Cardinals traded 5.32 to acquire the very large DT Billy Hughes from the Lions, selected LT Jacob Washington with 6.2, and RG Doyle Burns with 7.30.
Finally, while not going after any big-name targets in post-draft UFA except for CB Tye Hill (who didn’t even return their phone call), the team did manage to add FB Felix Jones and FS DJ Parker to the team uncontested. Jones will provide the same speed at fullback Nehemiah Broughton brought to the table last season and should play a key role in Desmond Mayer’s sophomore campaign, while Parker will provide solid depth at SS in case the injury prone McElroy goes down.
To recap, the Cardinals accomplished several of their goals by trading for DT Frank Morton (see below), replacing C Linwood Dowe with Louis Vasquez, and acquiring LBs Rosario Garza and Vince Redd. They still have yet to find their future wide receiver or cornerback, but they did manage to haggle for WR Milan Finch in their trade with Denver, who, with some work, could become a reliable deep threat down the road.

Position Battles:
FS: FS Darcel McBath/FS Michael Huff
This is one that was touched on a little bit earlier. Veteran safety Michael Huff has one more year as a capable safety this year, and looks to be the better player on paper. He also carries a great presence of leadership in the locker room. With that said, you’d figure he’d be a lock for the job, but the coaching staff will keep a close eye on McBath. He isn’t too far behind Huff in skill level, and he has already been waiting to take over for Huff for the past couple of seasons. If McBath ends up getting worse on the bench, it might be necessary to sit Huff and let the kid have a chance.
FB: FB Felix Jones/FB Cole Bennett
This may be the closest position battle of them all. Each player has something unique they bring to the table at the position. Bennett offers size, strength, power, and is simply an animal, while Jones can get out on the toss plays and occupy at least one blocker to help the running back get around the edge. While Bennett would likely put up the better numbers, he won’t be able to keep up with HB Desmond Mayer on the outside runs, thus rendering himself near useless for that play. On the other hand, while Felix is capable of getting outside, he’s not near the inside blocker that Bennett is and will sometimes get too ahead of the play, failing to pick up the correct player. This may come as a surprise to some as Jones was recently signed to a 3.5m deal and Bennett was placed on the training block, but this could be one that lasts well into the regular season. It’s been rumored that TE Craig Stevens has been taking some snaps at the position as well, so if neither Jones nor Bennett can get the job done, Stevens could take over. He appears to be the best talent of the bunch by far, combining Jones’ speed with Bennett’s size and strength with his blocking skills falling somewhere in-between the two, but the coaches feel his talent would be wasted at the position instead of being used at TE. It is an option, however, as the recently welcomed-back #2 TE Jared Cook is very capable himself.
Slot WR: WR Buster Davis/WR Milan Finch
The Cardinals acquired receiver Milan Finch in the deal that sent 1.6 to Denver and Rosario Garza to Arizona. While the coaches were not quite sure if he would be part of their plans for the future or not, the idea of him being groomed to take over for the aging Percy Harvin is slowly catching on. While Buster Davis certainly has the upper-hand in the experience department, Finch is the faster player who can create mismatches with his quickness. Buster Davis...not so much. Still, Davis played very well for the Cardinals in the slot last season, and they most likely both will see time at the #3 slot this year, depending on the opponent and the players they’ll be lining up against.
Training Camp:
Throw Power: QB Colin Porter
To improve his arm strength, the rookie will be receiving personal javelin lessons from the fine female pictured below. Given the similar throwing motions, the idea is that more Porter throws the Javelin, the better he becomes, and the stronger his arm gets. It’s a surprisingly good work out. Let’s just hope that Porter hasn’t already learned a few tricks from Matt Leinart
Speed: WR Milan Finch, CB Clay Alvarado, CB Jahi Word-Daniels, OLB Joseph Burnett
It’s been a team goal for the Cardinals over the past couple of seasons to get faster, and things will be no different in training camp this year. The four players will race each other every day after practice, except each player will have two parachutes attached to them. The player who posts the best average time after the first ten runs is free to leave. After the next ten, the player who performs the best is once again free to leave. This is repeated until there is no one left. Rumor has it that the Cardinals have already hired two extra janitors specifically for this drill.

Cardinals 2015 Draft Recap |
After trading almost entirely out of the draft, the Cardinals didn't have a pick until the sixth round. But, as usual, that didn't stop them from trading into the draft to grab players that catch their eye. It happened twice on day two, as the Cardinals traded their future 2nd, 4th, and 5th round picks to the Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans in exchange for 3.2 and 4.5 in the draft. With 3.2 they selected QB Colin Porter out of Georgia Tech and LG Marlon Fuller out of N.C. State.
3.2 - QB Colin Porter - With Matt Leinart turning 32 this season, it's fair to say he's nearing the end of his career. He has three years left on his contract and then could be moved if Porter shows he is capable of being a starting quarterback in this league. Porter does not have the strongest arm, but that can be improved to a solid level before he even has to hit the field, and his real strength is how pro-ready he is. In fact, he isn't a far cry from the fifth overall pick Jimmy Clausen. Porter also boasts a unique amount of strength for the position, combined with a large frame. One concern is that he has been known to get injured easily, and has a slew of them in his history. The coaches hope he can overcome that at the pro level.
4.5 - LG Marlon Fuller - Fuller has a great combination of speed, strength, and pass blocking for an offensive lineman. In fact, he's one of only nine with the combo he has. He also compares to this former first round pick. With some help from the skew, some good progression, and some help on his strength in training camp, Fuller could very well take over for an aging lineman down the road.

1.6 Out, Garza In |
Only one day after the Cardinals acquired the sixth pick in the draft from the Indianapolis Colts, they sent it to Denver in a deal for the eighth overall selection in last years draft, Rosario Garza. Garza is thought to be a better talent than most of the linebackers in this year's class, a position the Cardinals have been aiming to replace with the aging Derrick Johnson having lost a step or two late in his career. The terms of the deal are as follows:
Cardinals Send:
1.6
3.8
OLB Derrick Johnson
Broncos Send:
OLB Rosario Garza
WR Milan Finch
Garza, besides being one of the more physically talented linebackers in the league, is locked up long term to a contract that only sees him earning just $15.46m over the next six years. Our sources inside the Cardinals organization tells us that they most likely would have taken CB Bobby Peterson or CB Wilbur Cunningham with the sixth overall pick had they held onto it, with Cunningham being the player more likely to be available. Had they taken Cunningham, with him being the pro-ready prospect that he is, that six-year-number would likely be more in the $60-70m range. While they were happy with the talent they would have gotten with a player like Cunningham, acquiring a player with Garza's talent and contract were too hard to pass up.
WR Milan Finch also comes to Arizona in the deal. While Finch isn't overly fast or tall, with some work on his speed in training camp over the next couple of years he could easily replace Percy Harvin as Arizona's deep threat after Harvin enters his football golden years, which are closer than some fans in Arizona would like to think.
It also may be hard for some Cardinal fans to get past the departure of long-time Cardinal Derrick Johnson. Johnson amassed nearly 500 tackles in his six years in the desert, and will be a sorely missed presence in the Cardinals locker room. However, his game has taken a significant hit over the past couple of seasons and he is no longer the player he once was. With the arrival of Garza and a horribly tight cap situation in Arizona, it was beginning to look more and more likely that Johnson had played his last game of a Cardinal.
With the departure of the Cardinal's first and third round picks, they no longer have a pick until the fifth round of the draft. As bleak as that may sound, the Cardinals don't see it as necessarily a bad thing considering the quality of this class compared to year's past, especially as they welcome two new, young faces in Garza and Finch who will hopefully play key roles in the team's success down the road.
Given the aforementioned cap situation, the Cardinals are not likely to be big players in post-draft free agency. And with their roster almost in-tact for the up and coming season, it's not likely you'll see too many more moves from them the remainder of the off-season. We'll be sure to keep you up to date with any and all big moves that may happen. |

Cardinals Acquire 1.6 |
After forever shopping 1.30 and 2.3 in order to move up in the draft, the Cardinals found a suitor: the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts, who presumably need quantity over quality at this point in time, had the sixth pick in the draft on the block for quite a while now, and decided early Friday morning to pull the trigger on Arizona's offer. The deal sends 1.30, 2.3, and 2.26 to Indy in exchange for the top ten pick.
The Cardinals front office was shopping their myriad of picks for several reasons. First and foremost, the cap is very tight this season with many players on the roster earning big-time dollars this season, and it would have been near impossible to sign three talented players to deals and still have the cap room to fill out the roster. Secondly, the draft class this year is not all that deep, and the team's draft experts weren't so sure that they would be able to find the talent they were looking for at those picks. Finally, the Cardinals roster is in need of a superstar as compared to three good but not great players.
It is unknown who GM Tyler Richardson is targeting with the pick, but our sources inside the organization tell us that the following players are being brought in for personal workouts with the team:
DT Ndamukong Suh
DT Geno Atkins
OLB Dexter Davis
CB Bobby Peterson
CB Wilbur Cunningham
DE Brandon Graham
QB Jimmy Clausen
MLB Donald Butler
OLB Austin Spitler
As usual, stay tuned for more off-season news out of Arizona. |
