TRADE:: Shiver Me Timbers -- New Buc a Swashbuckler or Lass?
Friday, March 5th, 2014
Jim Flynn, Yahoo Sports!
A source close to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has told Yahoo Sports' Jim Flynn the Buccaneers have finalized a deal with the Oakland Raiders that is waiting league approval. The Buccaneers organization no longer releases the terms of a trade prior to being approved by the RZL Trade Committee.
The framework of the deal is believed to be as follows:
---------------------------------------
Tampa Bay Buccaneers receive::
QB Brian Brohm
Oakland Raiders receive::
2014 Draft Pick
---------------------------------------
Another offseason, another Quarterback controversy? Unlikely. Reports are beginning to circulate that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have finalized a deal that will make Super Bowl Backup QB Brian Brohm a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. Brohm has some of the best measurables of any Quarterback in the league. The problem? His durability. Brohm, who has been evaluated by team and league doctors, is past the point in his career where he might get hurt-- this guy is going to get injured if he attempts to start 16 games in this league. Many doctors have encouraged him to step away from the game, and he may not be very far from that stage. It is believed that he will be a mentor and backup to ('13-'14) Starter, and fellow injury-prone QB Colt McCoy.
Brohm has spent the last four seasons in Oakland, but hasn't completed a full season since 2011. Al Davis, frustrated by the fragile QB, decided to unceremoniously replace him as the starter last offseason after a story leaked that the Buccaneers had acquired QB Byron Leftwich from the Jacksonville Jaguars. With the source jumping the gun, the Raiders swooped in, drove up the price, and found their franchise QB. Twenty games later, they had a Lombardi Trophy to reward them for their transgressions. With the QB situation in Oakland seemingly under control for the next two or three seasons, the time seems right for the Raiders to draft a Quarterback and begin to develop him behind Leftwich. Brohm, on the other hand, represents a different approach for a Buccaneers team that was leaning heavily towards doing the same thing behind McCoy. Without a first round pick, the team really felt like the top couple prospects would be gone by their first pick, so could not pass up the value of acquiring Brohm for, what is believed to be, a mid-round pick. While McCoy should remain the starter, expect the Buccaneers to try and get a few clutch spot starts out of the veteran and capitalize on his fragile, yet immense ability.
Despite the addition, don't expect a disturbance or scene from McCoy. "If it is true, I look forward to working with Brian. I went through the same thing last offseason when they traded for QB Hunter Cantwell, so I am used to it. They named him the starter, they made him a team captain, but the fact was we were just Starter 1A and Starter 1B. The team seems to have this stigma around me based on my health, and they make a solid effort to make sure I am healthy for the postseason each year. Fact is, I played in all 17 games last year. I didn't show up on an injury report and I think I have shown the team I am durable, so as far as I am concerned, Brohm will just be a mentor and an insurance policy. My contract here is guaranteed, I love Tampa, I have a No Trade Clause-- I am not going anywhere. I welcome the competition." McCoy added.
When we have more details on this trade, we will update you. Stay tuned!
